Fusing glass began with the ancient Mesopotamians some 3500 years
ago. Two are more pieces of glass usually with colors in between
are fired in a kiln until the glass gets hot enough to fuse together -
to become one piece.
THE TRAVIS COLLECTION OF FUSED-GLASS began a
revival of this ancient art form in the early 1980s. Since they
developed by their own technique, the process may be somewhat different
than other artists.
The first step is cutting the glass from large
sheets of glass into the size and shape desired.Next, each cut glass piece is cleaned on both sides.
The cut and cleaned piece of glass is placed on a
light-box (light comes up from underneath). The design is formed (decorated) by sprinkling colored enamels on
the glass.This decorating
is done with a series of steps until the design is complete.
